Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5 for well-scoped everyday work, including bug fixes, documents, slides, and spreadsheets. The company reports faster generation and lower typical task costs than Sonnet 5, despite unchanged input and output token prices. It positions Opus 5.5 for more complex, open-ended work.
Context
Token price and task price are different measures. A model can cost less overall by reaching the result in fewer steps, while a high-effort run may still be expensive. Comparing the same finished deliverable at the same quality threshold is more informative than either price in isolation.
